I have been playing and writing music for near enough ten years. The past four of those years have been a rollercoaster in terms of my musical career as well as in terms of the inevitable changes and curveballs life throws at you. From the loss of two friends in early 2012 to moving, briefly to the USA and then onto Canada where I now live permanently the last few years have truly been life changing in every sense of the word. In early 2012 I joined a band that we called The Four Roads with some of my best friends in the world. This project took us literally to the other side of the world and it will always be dear to my heart. In the summer of 2013 after a tour of Ontario and Quebec I moved down to Northern Virginia for three months and then back to Canada in November of that year. It was a tough decision to make and ultimately lead to the end of that band. However, 3 years later that band, the things we did together, the people we met, the places we went still inspire my music to this day. After just over a year of living in Canada I joined a band called The Wilderness and have been busy with that project since January 2015. While I love both bands that I've played in in the last four years there was always a part of me that wanted to record and release some simpler music.
That is where this record stemmed from. It had been over 3 years since I had recorded any music as a solo artist and I had a handful of songs that didnt seemed appropriate to record on my own. "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue" is exactly what it says on the cover. It is a mixture of songs written over the last four years, some old, some new, one cover and with the overarching theme of melancholy, nostalgia and sadness. I feel its easier to play sad songs on my own. I feel its important to discuss aspects of life that are not alway easy to talk about and that maybe even at times, uncomfortable to play. I hope that someone, somewhere can listen to some of these songs and connect with them on a personal level because maybe the themes I touch upon in these songs might resonate with them? Although these songs all came from very personal and unique situations, I feel that the themes of the songs are things that almost everyone experiences; life, death, growing up, love, loss, grieving and discovery of something new.
I recorded this album with just an acoustic guitar and my voice with Tim Aylesworth in his basement studio in a couple of hours one Tuesday evening. I toyed with the idea of having a full backing band for the album but upon some further reflection, these songs were written on an acoustic guitar in my bedroom and I felt that a more honest, bare bones approach to the songs would serve them better on this particular EP. Many of my favourite songs of all time were recorded in this way and songs that inspired me to write the ones for this record were recorded in a similar way. There are mistakes and inconstancies and at some points I mess up the lyrics but in some ways I like that.
I hope you enjoy the record. Thanks for the continued support from my family, friends and fans! I couldnt do this without you all.
